Children’s Eye Health: How to Spot Vision Problems Early

Children rely heavily on their vision for learning, playing, and exploring the world. Yet, vision problems often go unnoticed because children may not realise their eyesight is poor. Regular eye checks are crucial to ensure children’s eyes develop properly and to prevent potential learning delays or behavioural issues linked to undiagnosed vision problems.

Common Vision Problems in Kids

  • Myopia (Short-sightedness): Difficulty seeing distant objects clearly.
  • Hyperopia (Long-sightedness): Trouble focusing on nearby objects.
  • Astigmatism: Blurred or distorted vision due to an irregular eye shape.
  • Amblyopia (Lazy Eye): Poor vision in one eye due to it not developing properly.
  • Strabismus (Crossed Eyes): Misalignment of the eyes, affecting depth perception.

Signs Your Child Might Have a Vision Issue

Watch for:
  • Squinting, tilting the head, or closing one eye
  • Holding books or screens very close
  • Frequent headaches or eye rubbing
  • Difficulty concentrating on schoolwork
  • Losing place while reading or avoiding reading
  • Complaints of blurred or double vision
Left untreated, vision problems can impact a child’s learning, social development, and confidence.

When Should Children Have an Eye Test?

  • Before starting school: Early testing can catch problems before they affect learning.
  • Regularly during school years: Vision changes as kids grow, so annual checks are recommended.
  • If you notice symptoms: Don’t wait — book an appointment if you have concerns.

What is a cataract?   A cataract is the clouding of the eyes lens that occurs naturally as we age. Similar to a dirty windscreen on a car, the cloudier the cataract, the more difficult it is for light to pass through and see a clear image.   Almost everyone will develop cataracts if they…
