Macula Month: Protect Your Sight This May

May is Macula Month, a nationwide awareness campaign led by the Macular Disease Foundation Australia. It’s a timely reminder for all Australians to understand their risk of macular disease and take proactive steps to protect their vision.

At Bridge Eye Care, we’re passionate about helping our community maintain healthy vision and Macula Month is the perfect opportunity to highlight why regular eye care matters.

What is the Macula & Why is it Important?
The macula is a small but critical part of the retina, responsible for your central vision. It allows you to read, recognise faces, drive and see fine details clearly.

When the macula is affected by disease, central vision becomes blurred or distorted, while side (peripheral) vision often remains intact.

Understanding Macular Disease
Macular disease is the leading cause of severe vision loss and blindness in Australia.

There are several types, but the most common is age-related macular degeneration (AMD). This condition:

  • Is typically painless and progressive
  • Affects central vision
  • Impacts everyday tasks like reading and recognising faces

In fact, around 1 in 7 Australians over 50 show signs of AMD, often without even realising it.

Why Macula Month Matters
Macula Month is more than just awareness; it’s a call to action.

Many people don’t notice early signs of macular disease, which is why education and early detection are so important. When detected early, there are steps that can help slow progression and preserve vision.

Are You at Risk?
While macular disease can affect anyone, key risk factors include:

  • Age (50+)
  • Family history
  • Smoking
  • Poor diet and lifestyle

The good news? Some of these risks like smoking and diet, can be managed.

Signs to Look Out For
Macular disease can develop without obvious symptoms early on, but as it progresses you may notice:

  • Blurred or distorted central vision
  • Difficulty reading or seeing fine detail
  • Straight lines appearing wavy
  • Trouble recognising faces

Any sudden change in vision should be treated as urgent seek professional care immediately.

How to Protect Your Vision
This Macula Month, take simple steps to look after your eye health:

  •  Have regular eye tests – early detection is key
  •  Know your family history
  •  Don’t ignore vision changes
  •  Maintain a healthy lifestyle (especially stop smoking)
  •  Eat a balanced diet rich in leafy greens and antioxidants

Regular comprehensive eye exams are the only way to detect macular disease early, often before symptoms appear.

Our Message to You This May:
At Bridge Eye Care, we encourage everyone; especially those over 50, to make their eye health a priority this Macula Month. A simple eye test could make all the difference in protecting your sight for the future.

Book your eye test today and take the first step towards preserving your vision.
