UV and Sunglasses

Isn’t a bit of sun good for us?

While the sun is an excellent source of vitamin D, too much exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation can contribute to eye conditions and diseases including cataracts, pterygium and cancer of the skin around the eye.

Did you know, our eyes are 10 times more sensitive to UV than our skin. Did you know we acquire 80% or our lifetime’s UV exposure before our 18th birthday? Did you know 55% or Australian kids don’t have a pair of UV protection sunglasses?

Don’t stop at slip slop slap. Understanding just how vulnerable children (and adults ) are to UV exposure, developing good habits need to start early. Make sure to SLIDE a pair of sunglasses on all family members regardless of their age.

On top of serving a vital health function, sunglasses also protect our eyes from glare. Polarised lenses provide an additional level of protection from intense UV light bouncing off water and road surfaces and into our eyes, giving a superior visual experience.

And of course, sunglasses can simply be a fun fashion accessory. With brands like Maui Jim, Furla, Ray Ban, Bolle, Oroton and Cove to choose from, there is a style to suit everyone.

As an independent optometry practice we have the freedom to offer you more choice by accessing quality optic products from around the world. Our comprehensive approach to testing means we examine your eyes for UV damage as part of our overall eye health assessment. So don’t put off your regular eye exam – often we’ll pick up changes in your eye health before you notice any changes in your vision.
