What is a cataract?
A cataract is the clouding of the eyes lens that occurs naturally as we age. Similar to a dirty windscreen on a car, the cloudier the cataract, the more difficult it is for light to pass through and see a clear image.
Almost everyone will develop cataracts if they live long enough, however the main consideration with cataracts, and having them removed is if they are affecting your quality of life and visual goals.
What are the symptoms?
Symptoms of cataracts can vary but usually include blurred distance vision, difficulty driving at night, requiring greater light to read small text, increased glare sensitivity and difficulty driving at dawn or dusk. However, the majority of time they are asymptomatic, and therefore optometric examination is required to diagnose and triage.
