Signs Your Child Might Be Struggling with Their Vision

Good vision plays a vital role in a child’s learning, development, and overall wellbeing. Because children often don’t realise when their sight isn’t normal, vision problems can easily go unnoticed. Instead of telling you they can’t see clearly, kids usually adapt or show signs in their behaviour.

Here are some common indicators that your child might be experiencing vision difficulties:

  1. Squinting or Tilting the Head – If your child frequently squints, tilts their head, or covers one eye, it could mean they are trying to compensate for blurred or double vision.
  1. Holding Things Too Close – Children with near-sightedness often hold books, tablets, or toys very close to their face. If you notice this regularly, it may be a sign they are struggling to see things further away.
  1. Complaints of Headaches or Eye Strain – Headaches, particularly after school or homework, may indicate uncorrected vision problems or difficulties focusing.
  1. Avoiding Reading or Schoolwork – If your child avoids reading, loses their place often, or skips lines, it could be related to vision difficulties rather than disinterest.
  1. Frequent Eye Rubbing or Watering – Excessive rubbing, blinking, or watery eyes may signal eye strain or underlying vision conditions.
  1. Sitting Too Close to the TV or Whiteboard – Children who sit very close to the TV, or who struggle to see the whiteboard at school, may be experiencing short-sightedness.
  1. Behavioural Changes and Frustration – Vision problems can impact concentration and confidence, sometimes leading to irritability or behavioural challenges in the classroom.

What You Can Do

The good news is that most vision problems in children can be treated effectively if detected early. Regular eye examinations are important even if your child isn’t showing obvious signs.

If you’ve noticed any of these signs, consider booking a comprehensive eye examination with us at Bridge Eye Care. A check-up can provide peace of mind and ensure your child has the best possible start for school.
