Winter Eye Care: Protecting Your Vision During the Colder Months

As the temperature drops and we settle into the colder months, it's easy to overlook how winter can affect our eye health. While South Australia's winters aren't harsh compared to other regions, the seasonal changes still bring unique challenges for our eyes. At Bridge Eye Care, we want to ensure your eyes are protected year-round. Here's what you need to know about winter eye health and how you can keep your vision clear and your eyes comfortable through the season.

How Winter Affects Your Eyes

  • Dry Eyes from Cold Winds and Indoor Heating: One of the most common complaints we hear during winter is dry, irritated eyes. Cold winds outside combined with dry indoor heating can reduce the natural moisture in your eyes, leaving them feeling gritty, itchy, or even watery.
  • Increased Screen Time: With shorter days and cooler temperatures, many of us spend more time indoors—and often, in front of screens. This can lead to digital eye strain, causing symptoms like fatigue, blurred vision, and headaches, and also contribute to dry eye from reduced blink rates.
  • Higher Risk of Infections: During winter, we're more prone to colds and flus, which can sometimes lead to conjunctivitis or other eye infections. Shared towels, unwashed hands, and poor hygiene during illness can all contribute.

Tips to Protect Your Eyes in Winter

  • Stay Hydrated and Use Artificial Tears: Combat dryness by drinking plenty of water and using lubricating eye drops if needed. These can help maintain moisture on the eye's surface.
  • Add Moisture to the Air: Consider using a humidifier in your home or office to counteract the drying effects of heaters. Even a bowl of water near a heat source can help increase humidity.
  • Wear Protective Eyewear Outdoors: When outdoors, wear glasses or sunglasses to shield your eyes from cold wind and UV rays. Yes—even in winter, UV protection matters!
  • Take Screen Breaks: Follow the 20-20-20 rule: every 20 minutes, look at something 20 feet away for 20 seconds. This helps reduce eye strain and gives your eyes a much-needed rest. This is also a good chance to use some artificial lubrication if dryness is an issue.
  • Practice Good Hygiene: Wash your hands regularly, avoid touching your eyes, and avoid sharing makeup or towels, especially during cold and flu season.

When to See Your Optometrist

If you experience persistent dryness, blurry vision, or signs of an infection, it's important to have your eyes examined. These symptoms can worsen over time or indicate underlying issues that need professional attention. At Bridge Eye Care, we offer comprehensive eye examinations and personalised advice to maintain your optimal vision all year long.
